Ozark was an incredibly popular Netflix series that provided audiences with four seasons of entertainment, but many fans were surprised when the show ended in 2022. The show followed the illegal exploits of Jason Bateman’s Marty Byrde as he moved to the Ozarks to launder a cartel’s drug money in order to keep his family safe from his enemies. An extremely character-focused show, it was widely praised for its strong writing and even stronger performances.

The ending of Ozark season 4 came as somewhat of a surprise, as it still felt like there was potential for the show to carry on into the future. Although it provided fans with a much more concrete ending than most Netflix originals are given the opportunity for, there were still plot threads that felt rushed and certain subplots that definitely could’ve continued for another season. However, since the conclusion of the show, Ozark’s creators have been very clear about why the series ended where it did.

Ozark Wasn't Canceled & Ended On Its Own Terms

It was the decision of Ozark’s creators to end the show after its fourth season. Speaking with THR, the crew revealed that Ozark was initially intended to be five seasons long, but when writing the fourth season, it was decided that a supersized final season was better than splitting the story into two. The decision for Ozark to continue until its desired conclusion is a great indicator of how successful the show was, as not all Netflix originals are given the same opportunity. Luckily, this meant Ozark had plenty of time to wrap up all the loose ends before finishing.

After Ozark season 3's ending, the decision was made to blend seasons four and five together because the show was already reaching its natural conclusion. There’s been no indication that Netflix pressured the writers into this decision, as several audiences may have speculated, and the creators have always spoken positively about the way the show wrapped up. There were definitely areas that could’ve been expanded, but the crew likely wanted to avoid lengthening the show unnecessarily until it inevitably ran out of steam - instead, Ozark went out on a high.

Ozark's Story Can Still Continue Beyond Season 4

However, since those unresolved subplots still exist (the future of the Byrde family, the FBI investigation into the cartel, etc.), it’s always possible for Ozark to return in some form. What's more, the creators themselves have already expressed some interest in doing a spinoff in the future (via TV Line). Though several important characters were shockingly killed off in the final season, there are just enough characters still alive for a spinoff to seem like a good idea. That said, any potential spinoffs would need to remain wholly distinct from the original series to avoid ruining Ozark’s satisfying ending.
