The Netflix original sitcom Country Comfort brought a bit of down-home charm to the streamer during season 1, but will the show ever get a season 2? Released in 2021, Country Comfort stars Katharine McPhee as Bailey Hart, a down-and-out country singer who takes a job as a nanny for a cowboy widower. Throughout its 10-episode first season, the series delivered consistent family-friendly laughs and allowed its multi-talented star to shine as both an actor and singer. While it wasn't necessarily the most groundbreaking series in TV history, Country Comfort was exactly as its title suggested: a comforting experience.
Season 1 of Country Comfort received modest reviews from critics, but the debut episode did manage to snag a Primetime Emmy for its cinematography. What the series did best in season 1 was to establish its premise, and it certainly had enough going for it to become a long-running hit for Netflix. The cast and characters of Country Comfort season 1 were all strong, and they even landed a major guest appearance from country music legend LeAnn Rimes to boost interest. At the conclusion of season 1, Country Comfort had gotten off to a good start and seemed destined to return for another season.
Country Comfort Is Not Getting A Season 2
Unfortunately for fans of the sitcom, Country Comfort season 2 is definitely not happening, and the show was actually canceled just a few months after its March 2021 debut. As reported by Deadline, Country Comfort met its end along with a slew of other Netflix originals like the Kevin James-led sitcom The Crew, and Gabriel Iglesias's Mr. Iglesias. Without the benefit of a pilot episode, many Netflix shows come and go because the entire first season serves as a proof of concept. If the response isn't an immediate success, Netflix typically pulls the plug.
Ratings were most likely the biggest cause of concern for Country Comfort, and though Netflix doesn't typically release its numbers, there is little reason why the show would be canned otherwise. Plenty of Netflix shows get canceled after one season, and the streamer is notoriously fickle when it comes to series that don't become overnight successes. For every show like Grace and Frankie, there are a handful of series like Country Comfort that slip through the cracks. With a deluge of original content on Netflix, it is often difficult for shows to connect with the right audience immediately.
Netflix Has Struggled With Its Multi-Cam Sitcoms
Though they are often a formula for success, Netflix has not had the best track record with multi-cam sitcoms like Country Comfort. Network series like Friends and How I Met Your Mother were some of the brightest examples of the genre, and though they are formulaic, audiences latch on to the easy-to-enjoy shows. What's On Netflix broke Netflix's struggles down by the numbers when they reported that Country Comfort only stayed in the U.S. top 10 for 10 days, far below the expected span of a month that hit shows usually last for. As with many failed Netflix sitcoms, it seems as if no one was watching Country Comfort.
