The centerpiece of The Mandalorian is Pedro Pascal’s balanced portrayal of Din Djarin. On the one hand, by refusing to reveal his face, Din Djarin becomes mysteriously distant from the audience. He’s more of a helmet than a face, so he’s become more of an icon than an emotional character. But on the other hand, Din’s relationship with Grogu is what brings out his emotions. Through Grogu, the audience sees exactly what is going on beneath his beskar exterior. And while their relationship is what ultimately drives the show forward, there have still been a few times throughout the series where Din almost opened up to others.

Despite the gritty tone of the show, there are still many who believe Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze should be a couple—especially after their adventures on Mandalore in The Mandalorian season 3. While Din and Bo-Katan come to respect one another in The Mandalorian season 3, they’re still walking on separate paths. Din is content with never removing his helmet again, whereas Bo-Katan relishes the freedom to show her face to her people. But while Bo-Katan is pretty much ruled out as a partner for Din Djarin, he did almost settle down with someone else in The Mandalorian season 1.

In The Mandalorian season 1, episode 4, Din Djarin was mere inches away from getting together with Omera, a woman from Sorgan. Din Djarin and Omera’s relationship ended up being relegated to only one episode, but the impact it left on him cannot be overstated. By the end of the episode, Din Djarin was almost even willing to let Omera take off his helmet. He was also ready to leave Grogu in her care, highlighting just how far he was willing to go for her. Nevertheless, he ultimately chooses to continue walking in the Way, leaving Omera behind in the paradise he dreamed of having one day.

Din Focuses On Honor Rather Than Feelings

His devotion to the Creed is where he finds the most joy, and his sense of belonging comes from helping Grogu and the other foundlings in the Children of the Watch. His goal isn’t to find a partner, but to become the best Mandalorian he can be. For someone like Bo-Katan, being the best Mandalorian means leading her people on Mandalore. But for Din, being the best Mandalorian means helping others, just as he was helped as a child.

Din Djarin’s catalyst as a character occurred when he was young. Even after decades, he still sees the Mandalorians as silent saviors who protect the innocent and weak from the bigger threats in the galaxy. Din Djarin’s helmet needs to stay on because he believes it's the only way to remain a true Mandalorian. To this end, he immediately seeks to redeem himself in The Mandalorian season 3, because he cannot bear to lose his perception of the perfect Mandalorian. He must honorably abide by the Creed, or else risk losing his identity entirely.

Din's Relationship With Grogu Is Enough

According to Christian Alzmann in The Art of Star Wars: The Mandalorian (Season One), Omera and Din “have feelings for one another, but a relationship will never happen.” Din didn’t let Omera take off his helmet, yet he voluntarily took it off for Grogu in The Mandalorian season 2 finale. Just being the honorable protector Grogu needs is enough for Din to be happy; Grogu is the only one he’s willing to go the extra mile for.

Din’s devotion to Grogu is what keeps his helmet on, and it’s ultimately what will drive him away from ever having a romantic partner. However, The Mandalorian season 3 finale shows him finally attaining everything he’s wanted. Din becomes Grogu’s father, and Grogu begins to walk the same path as him. Din abandons his bounty hunting and now works freelance jobs for the New Republic, devoting his skills to catching criminals rather than capturing quarry. In the end, a romantic relationship isn’t necessary for him because it’d end up distracting from the whole point of The Mandalorian.
